Classic Granny Square in One Color

Chain 4, join with slip stitch to form a ring

Round 1: Chain 3 (counts as dc), work 2 more dc into ring *ch 3, work 3 dc into ring.  Repeat from * twice, ch3, then join with a slip stitch into 3rd chain of the beginning chain 3.

Round 2: Sl st into next 2 sts.  Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 2 more dc into ch 3 space, Ch 3, 3 dc into same space.  *Ch 2, [3 dc, 3 ch, 3 dc] into ch 3 space.  Repeat from * twice, ch2, join with a sl st into top of first ch 3.

Round 3: Sl st into next 2 sts.  Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 2 more dc into ch 3 space, Ch 3, 3 dc into same space *Chain 2, 3 dc in next ch 2 space, ch 2 [3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc] in next chain 3 space.  Repeat from *twice, then ch 2, 3 dc into next ch 2 space.  Ch 2 and join with a slip stitch into 3rd chain of beginning chain 3 - or join using invisible join as shown in the video.
Just a note - I like to only slip stitch in two stitches leading up to my chain 3 space whenever I start a new round and this is how the instructions are given here.  One of my fellow crocheters also makes a slip stitch into the chain 3 space, and she tells me this is how many others do it as well.  As you can see, my granny looks just fine the way I do it. Hers look just fine her way. You also should choose the way you prefer and what you think works best for you.

  2. This is so helpful! Thank you for taking the time to do this. Still strugling with my tension, ie how to hold the wool, but I'm told this comes with practice!

  3. Thank you so much, I have been trying to crochet for goodness knows how long. My tension is all over the place but I'll get there :-)

  4. I have a silly question, and I am asking here (despite seeing helpers on other vloggers) : After I have a pile of squares, do you have a how-to for that inbetween bit connecting them? I have been hunting for tutorials for a long time and yours are the best and easiest to follow I have seen, so am hoping for more :) (http://www.scenicreflections.com/files/Afghan_Blanket_Wallpaper_0u8t.jpg)

    1. Afraid I don't. Seaming/joining is probably my least favorite thing to do so I avoid it at all costs. Try Crochet Geek on YouTube, she is the crochet queen!

    1. Yes, just keep going round and round until it is as big as you want it to be.

  6. Thank you for going slowly, pausing before each new stitch, and explaining what you are doing. This is my first time trying this pattern and I want to do it right.

  9. Hello, I would like to ask a question. I watched your video on making a granny square. But I seem to have a little problem. The first few rounds are a little off centered to the right. I was wondering if maybe you knew what went wrong.

  11. Can you please correct your pattern instructions? Just before completing the fie first slip stitch to close the round, your video shows you doing a chain 3 before the slip stitch, which is not mentioned in the pattern.

I unwound three attempts before watching your video and seeing why my attempts looked so strange.

    Thank you.

  14. Thank you so much for your video, I have been trying to learn to crochet for years. My Daughter who is amazing at crocheting tried, but I went back to embroidery and knitting.

  15. I am a newbie and would like to know when do I double chain and when do I use three chain. Is dc on the straight side of the square one either side of the triple crochet? And use three chains before and after rounding corners?

  16. Thanks for working at a speed that made it possible to work with you! I'm new to all this crochet and still finding my way with holding the wool and the tension.

  17. I’m left handed. Have been trying to crochet for years. Followed your Awesome instructions, you voice is calming, had a couple of ‘what the’ moments. Have now completed 3 blankets for family, now doing for rescue dogs.
    Thank you so much. πŸ’–πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί
